Goodyear Wrangler MTR is listed in the All-Terrain section of tires but is much closely related to mud tires, giving a sensational off-road performance. Whereas BFGoodrich KM3 is a Mud-Terrain tire and is also highly specialized for off-roading.

MTR offers a comparatively higher void ratio and gives better performance on mud/snow terrains whereas KM3 having comparatively narrower grooves with stone ejectors is a better choice for icy and rocky grounds.

It offers comparatively narrower grooves and less efficient sipes. Also, it has mud-phobic bars with traction-armor sidewalls. The stone ejectors are comparatively not much efficient in their function. Moreover, a Krawl-Trek compound, CoreGuard Max technology and liner flex zone are also installed in this tire.

On-Road Traction Comparison

MTR features a higher void ratio and lower contact patch with the road. The reduced grip and increased braking distance make this tire less effective in on-road dry conditions. However, the wider grooves of this tire promise excellent traction in wet conditions as they wipe away water more efficiently. The higher void ratio of MTR allows maximum traction in muddy conditions. This tire comes with wider grooves and well-spaced tread blocks which provides several biting edges to bite mud and throw it backward, allowing the smooth movement of the tire. The well-grooved shoulders also participate to give efficient traction as they allow the steady passing of mud through them.

KM3 comes with a lower void ratio and less wide grooves as compared to its counterpart. The grooves of this tire may get stuck into the deep mud as it lacks in the process of biting and throwing an adequate amount of mud and slush backwards, comparatively. But still it can move on mud as it is a mud terrain tire specially built to deal with such conditions.

Snow Terrain

MTR offers an inventive tread design for extreme off-road performance. The wider grooves of this tire efficiently grab soft snow and throw it backward, granting maximum snow traction. However, in the ice, the greater contact patch lowers the tire grip and makes the tire more slippery. Therefore, this tire is not much suitable on icy roads.

KM3 has less wide grooves which reduces its efficiency on soft snow. Due to its lower void ratio this tire struggles in snowy conditions.  However, the narrower grooves result in increasing the contact patch of this tire which grants it an efficient grip on icy roads. So, this tire is less slippery and more reliable on ice.

Rock Terrain

MTR offers wider grooves and bold stone ejectors which improves its performance on rocks. Highly spaced grooves increase the grip of this tire on a rocky path whereas stone ejectors hinder the small rocks from getting stuck into the grooves. Moreover, this tire offers a Kevlar®-reinforced sidewall and hardworking wraparound tread which provides puncture resistance, protects the sidewall from the blunt-edged rocks, and enhances off-road traction of this tire.

The grooves of KM3 are narrower comparatively which reduces its grip on rocks and the stone ejectors are also less prominent in preventing the stone’s adhesion into the grooves. However, this tire is not as effective as its competitor on rocky terrain but it has adopted some features to improve its performance. Just like it offers Krawl-Tek compound which enhances its grip on rocky trails and CoreGuard Max technology which protects the sidewall from damages like chips and cuts that can be offered by sharp-edged rocks.

Which Tire is More Comfortable?

The higher void ratio of MTR reduces its contact patch with the road. The reduced contact patch traps more air into the grooves and when this squeezed air rushes out it produces a loud noise. This reduces the on-road comfort of the tire. The same wide grooves improve the off-road comfort of this tire as they give better traction and minimize the unusual effects of jerks.

KM3 offers a lower void ratio and higher contact patch which improves its on-road traction. As the narrower grooves of this tire trap less air into them and result in lower noise production thus increasing the on-road comfort comparatively. This tire is not much comfortable for off-roading as its less wide grooves are less efficient in absorbing jerky effects which reduce the comfort level.

Treadwear and Durability

MTR featuring a higher void ratio and wide grooves results in a lower contact patch which reduces the rolling resistance and treadwear of the tire. This tire also offers many features for increased durability. The 3 ply Dupont Kevlar® reinforced sidewalls promote puncture resistance and wraparound tread protects the tire against trail damages. An advanced silica tread compound also aids in increasing the durability of this tire.

KM3 is, however, less durable due to its greater contact patch and increased rolling resistance and treadwear but some innovative features aids in increasing its durability to some extent. This tire comes with Max CoreGuard technology which prevents sidewall damage. Moreover, it offers pinch shock resistant, cut/chip resistant compounds which aids in increasing its durability by reducing the treadwear.

Difference in Price

Goodyear MTR is although an All-Terrain tire but it leads many Mud-Terrain tires just like KM3 in off-road performance. Moreover, MTR with its aggressive tread design is more durable. These facts lead to its higher price.
